Champagne v. Sparkling Wine for Your Wedding: Does it Really Matter?
There is a great debate today as to whether it is proper for couples to serve sparkling wine versus champagne at their weddings. The food and drink selection is a major part of the wedding planning, and champagne can take up a significant part of that budget. Yet, many people don’t understand the difference between the two types of drink and if anyone can really tell the difference.
What is Champagne?
Champagne is actually a sparkling wine, but only one in 12 bottles of sparkling wine is actually champagne. Sparkling wine is basically a wine that has bubbles in it, and it can be made anywhere in the world. However, champagne can only be made in a small area of northern France that spans 86,000 acres. Only sparkling wine made in that area is allowed to be called champagne.
Is There a Real Difference?
In a simple sense, there is a difference between sparkling wine and champagne, because the process used to make the champagne is very complicated. Only the best sparkling wines use the Champagne Method to create their product, which involves allowing the bubbles to naturally evolve over several years.
Does Price Matter?
This is an important question when planning your wedding, because you are probably on a budget. While some of the most expensive sparkling wines and champagnes are quite expensive, most experts agree that you can find some wonderful bottles of each at reasonable prices.
Go With Your Own Taste
Don’t just worry about whether or not you are purchasing a champagne or sparkling wine for your wedding. Instead, go with one that makes your taste buds happy. For instance you may want a Rose for its fruity flavor or a Blanc de Noir for a deeper flavor. If you like a crisp, grape flavor, then a Blanc de Blanc may be your perfect choice. Either way, you should sample a few different sparkling wines and champagnes to be sure it will complement your dinner and desserts. Don’t worry about what the label says, just think more about your wedding day and how your drink will enhance your experience.
